Objective:To examine the association between the use of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra and sexual activity.
Materials and methods:A case-control design, which was used in this study, was used to determine the association between the use of Viagra and sexual activity.
Results:The risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the group of users taking Viagra was significantly increased in women compared with men (OR=4.7;P<.001). In addition, a significantly increased risk of STIs was observed among users of other erectile dysfunction drugs (P<>.01).
Conclusion:In this study, the use of Viagra is associated with an increased risk of STIs in women. The association of Viagra with sexual activity was confirmed by the significant increase in the risk of STIs in men.
Ethical Considerations:This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Wuhan University School of Medicine, China.

AbstractIn China, the use of erectile dysfunction drugs (ED) can be a concern for individuals who are not taking their ED drugs because of the lack of awareness and proper use. The present study aimed to determine the association between the use of Viagra and sexual activity among male patients suffering from ED and to explore the effects of Viagra on the sexual behavior of such patients. This study included 12,882 healthy male patients, aged 18 to 64 years, who were diagnosed with erectile dysfunction. The subjects used Viagra as a treatment option for their ED, which included the use of Viagra, in a daily manner. The patients were randomly divided into four groups, which were given Viagra tablets (10, 10 mg), sildenafil tablets (10 mg), tadalafil (20 mg), and vardenafil (20 mg) orally.
Methods:In this study, the data were collected in two phases, which was performed in a group of male patients suffering from ED. The patients used the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra and sildenafil tablets in a daily manner, while the patients used the ED medication tadalafil.
In this study, the risk of sexual activity was significantly higher in men than in women (OR=3.8;<.001) and erectile dysfunction (OR=4.7;<.001) patients. In addition, there was an increased risk of erectile dysfunction in the group of men who had a history of ED treatment, compared with the other ED groups (OR=3.7;=.002).
In this study, the use of Viagra was associated with an increased risk of sexual activity among male patients suffering from ED, as well as the risk of sexual activity among the group of patients taking ED drug, when the ED medication was used.
